Kids Bikes

As adults, most of us remember our first bicycle like we received it yesterday. There are few things more liberating for a child than to be able to ride a bike. Freedom, excitement and of course the fitness that comes along with riding a bike make purchasing one for your child a worthwhile investment from the age of around 3.

Sizing of Kids Bikes

There are 3 different sizes of bikes for kids and teenagers, all of which are named after their wheel size. It is difficult to say how old a child should be to fit a particular sized bike because every child is different but a general guideline is indicated below.

Tricycles

There is one exception which is a tricycle which is an excellent choice if your child (or indeed yourself) has difficulty maintaining their balanced on a normal bicycle. Tricycles come in sizes smaller than 12' and run right through to adult size. You can even get an adult sized tricycle with an electric assist engine which makes peddling up hills as easy as going down the other side!

Quality

All kids bikes and built to extremely high standards but as with everything, there are premium options. Typically bikes are made from steel (12' start from just $110) but for $49 more, you can upgrade to a lighter more maneuverable alloy bike for your child (a top of the line alloy 12' is just $159).

Clever options for absolute beginners

A really great option for the youngest of riders, is a 12' bicycle with a steering handle (RRP around $139). The handle allows an adult to control the speed and direction of the bicycle while a child is developing riding skills, confidence and stamina. It can be easily removed once the child has gained greater confidence and is a god send if you are two kilometers from home and you young one decides they do not want to pedal any more.
