Kai Sakakibara Race Report Penrith Open 5 September 2015 Penrith, NSW
Class: 14+ Open Men
The 2015 Penrith Open was held on a Saturday night, with racing commencing at 4.00pm. We
had a cruisy run in the morning, and headed out to the track at midday to prepare for the
event. Following the NaHonal Performance Standard TesHng in Brisbane on the weekend
prior, it was the first week of my 2 week rest, so I came into the event with no high
I was feeling quite strong on the track, but struggling a liOle down the first straight, and was
not in a dominant posiHon down the first straight as I had been at the NSW races throughout
the year. I got through the motos with 1st, 1st, 2nd, and qualified 2nd for the final.
I knew that my first straights weren’t the best on the day, so I had to make the most of the
start in the final, and hold my line into the first corner. I was able to to just that, geRng my
best start of the day in the final out of lane 1, and held off Blake Moore, who had been
beaHng me down the first straight in the motos, into the first corner. I cased the first pro jump
on the second straight, which slowed me down, but Blake ended up doing the same thing, and
let Luke Madill pass into 2nd behind me. My lap was a liOle unHdy, but I was able to hold Luke
off for the rest of the lap. I came through with the win.
I thoroughly enjoyed the night race hosted by Penrith BMX Club, and was very happy to be
able to put it together in the final for the win. Saya also took the win in the 14+ Open
Women’s class, making this our first shared win in Pro!
