Shimano 2012 products are on show and in stock
Today Shimano showed Australia what it has to offer for 2012
The highlights of the show were the Ultegra Di2, the Deore groupsets and Icetech brakes.
The ultegra groupset to the eye is larger than the Dura-ace components but possesses all the same performance qualities of the dura-ace. Shimano couldn’t display a working group set, i was a little disappointed i couldn’t try one out like last year with the Di2 dura ace. i was impressed by the battery performance. 90min maximum charge will last 2000km of riding.
Shimano Deore, XT and XTR is very impressive. I didn’t think you get a brake that would out perform the Shimano XT, but the best just got better. Shorter levers for 1 finger operation with a very parallel lever action gives you more feel making braking effortless. XT retains the very successful servo wave technology, keeping pads well away from the rotors when not needed to prevent brake drag and rolling resistance.
Xtr has a new trick up its sleeve. Spring force stabiliser switch. The chain stabiliser stabilises the chain through the roughest of rockgarden's reducing chain slap and noise. the end result is a quieter driveline smoother shift and no chain bounce. the stabiliser system is rumoured to filter through XT and saint in coming months.
Icetech technologies is all about keeping brakes cool. Stainless steel skins cover the very heat conductive alloy disk, helping wick away the heat. Keeping with the cool theme XTR caliper have been handed ceramic pistons so as not to draw heat into the oil. Icetech pads on the other hand absorb the heat and draw it into the cooler air outside the calliper via cooling fins on the pads. cooler brakes = durability, instant response, consistent power.
Some Shimano fast facts

Tiagra turns 10. Making sora the new 9spd
Mineral oil wont absorb moisture like dot fluid.
The new XT brakes are 25% more powerful.
Shimano make centerlock to 6 bolt disk mount converters
Shimano disks are available in 6 bolt.
dot fluid has a boiling point of over 3000deg/c. Mineral oil has a boiling point of 1400 deg/c
mtb brakes temperatures rarely raise over 400deg/c
2012 SPD pedals are wider for more stability
whats next?
The whispers are that you could combine Di2 with flight deck data to program the groupset to ride in a cruise control mode. Keeping the bike riding between preset cadence limits, or even heart rate limits.
Stabiliser technologies to filter through the XT and saint groupsets.
Who knows what Shimano have in their basement but for now we have some new toys to play with.
